Our Weight Loss Procedures

Gastric Sleeve

The gastric sleeve procedure, also called a sleeve gastrectomy, is a type of weight-loss surgery that reduces the size of the stomach. During the procedure, Dr. Cordero removes about 75–80% of the stomach, leaving behind a narrow, sleeve-shaped pouch. This smaller stomach limits the amount of food that can be eaten and helps decrease hunger by reducing the production of hunger hormones. This surgery is performed laparoscopically, using small incisions and specialized instruments.

Gastric Bypass

A gastric bypass is a weight-loss surgery that both reduces stomach size and changes the way food is absorbed. In this procedure, Dr. Cordero creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach and directly connects it to a section of the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach and part of the intestines. This limits how much food can be eaten at once and decreases calorie and nutrient absorption. The surgery is most often done laparoscopically, through small incisions in the abdomen.

Gastric Plication

Gastric Plication, also called laparoscopic gastric plication, is ideal for moderately overweight patients. It is a less-invasive procedure that reduces stomach size without removing any part of it. During the surgery, Dr. Cordero folds the stomach inward and stitches it in place, creating a smaller, tube-like pouch. This limits the amount of food the stomach can hold and helps promote a feeling of fullness with less food. Like other bariatric procedures, it is usually performed laparoscopically through small incisions.

Gastric Balloon

An intragastric balloon is our least invasive bariatric procedure and is well-suited for moderately overweight patients. Dr. Cordero places a soft & expandable balloon in the stomach. It is inserted endoscopically through the mouth and then filled with saline to occupy space in the stomach, leaving less room for food. This helps patients feel full sooner and eat smaller portions. The balloon typically remains in place for about six months before being removed.

Common Questions About Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is a significant decision, and it’s natural to have questions. Here are some of the most common inquiries we receive.

What is the recovery time for bariatric surgery?

Recovery is faster than in years past thanks to the advantages of laparoscopic surgery. After surgery, our patients usually stay in the hospital for one night. Activities involving physical exertion need to be avoided for about a week.

Are there dietary restrictions before & after surgery?

Yes, following a specific diet before and after surgery is crucial for success. Dr. Cordero’s nutritionist will guide you through each stage of your journey.

How do I know which procedure is right for me?
Dr. Cordero will assess your health and weight loss goals to recommend the most suitable procedure during your consultation.
Will bariatric surgery open the door to future procedures that I want to have?

If your body mass index is over 30-32, then you may have been told to lose weight first before having other procedures such breast implants, mommy makeovers, and liposuction. If this has proven to be an obstacle, then bariatric surgery could indeed help you get your BMI to a safe level permitting you to proceed with other procedures.

How much weight can I expect to lose?
Weight loss varies by individual and procedure, but patients typically lose 50-70% of excess weight within two years.
